Abstract:The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) was selected by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for the Strategic Highway Research Program 2 (SHRP2) Lead Adopter Incentive Implementation Assistance Grant to deploy the Renewal 10 (R10) Guidebook for Project Management Strategies for Complex Projects. The overarching objective of this research is to help Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) maximize its benefits form the successful utilization of the R10 product and enhance its current project delivery process and development plan for its complex projects. GDOT projects are increasingly becoming more complex. More than any time in the GDOT’s history, the agency is relying on innovative project delivery systems, such as design-build (DB) and public-private partnership (P3), to deliver complex projects. In this research, several components of the R10 research product are rigorously evaluated considering the GDOT Office of Innovative Delivery to enhance its design-build manual. Complexity mapping, 5-dimensional project management methods, and several tools are incorporated into the design-build manual to facilitate managing complexity in GDOT design-build and P3 projects. This is an implementation research project and the final deliverable, the updated design-build manual, is developed in partnership with the Office of Innovative Delivery.
