Abstract:In this project, researchers developed and performed field validation of a wireless structural sensing system for a variety of bridge response measurements, including strain, acceleration, and displacement. The research team used the wireless strain measurement for bridge weigh-in-motion (BWIM) analysis, correlating vibration data of the bridge with the axle loads of the test vehicle. A drive-by bridge inspection system, instrumented with wireless sensors, consisting of portable wireless BWIM+NDE devices was developed for providing automated and convenient bridge safety evaluation. It was integrated with state-of-the-art ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies that can assist in monitoring damage growth in critical structural members.
