Abstract:Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), formerly Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems (IVHS), provide the tools to help us address current surface transportation problems, as well as anticipate and address future demands through an intermodal, strategic approach to transportation. ITS applies current and emerging technologies in such fields as information processing, communications, control, and electronics to surface transportation needs. While ITS technologies alone cannot solve our transportation problems, they can enable us to rethink our approach to solutions, and make current activities more efficient and cost-effective. Effectively integrated and deployed, ITS technologies offer many benefits, including more efficient use of our infrastructure and energy resources, and significant improvements in safety, mobility, accessibility, and productivity. This report describes ITS projects, tests, and studies initiated through September 30, 1997, that have been partially or totally financed from Federal ITS funds. The purpose of this report is to describe all major projects, tests, and studies for each ITS program area.
