Abstract:Through the Smart Roadside Initiative (SRI), a Benefit-Cost Analysis (BCA) tool was developed for the evaluation of various new transportation technologies at a State level and to provide results that could support technology adoption by a State Department of Transportation (DOT). The BCA tool was designed to support State DOT agencies preliminary decision-making on the cost-effectiveness of implementing freight-related transportation technologies. The BCA tool provides general guidance on the cost-effectiveness of implementing a transportation technology and the use of State resources. The BCA tool can be used to evaluate a transportation-related technology after development and prototype testing have been completed. The BCA tool is designed to evaluate the new technology’s economic (to the agency), social (to road users), and environmental impacts.
This document has been prepared to present the benefit and cost method of the BCA tool.
