Abstract:The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA} signed by the U.S. Congress in December of 199 1 called for improvements in surface transportation through technological advancements. The U.S. Department of Transportation subsequently launched the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Program, involving research. strategic planning, and operational tests of new technologies. These technologies promise to bring much needed operational improvements to the nation’s transportation system, and provide a safer, more convenient, and more efficient trip experience for the traveling public. The I-71 Corridor ITS Strategic Deployment Plan is an effort undertaken by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to develop a strategic plan for deploying ITS technologies. The vision for this project is to identify, innovative ITS technologies to satisfy the many challenges facing the rural I-71 Corridor between Columbus and Cleveland. The focus is on incident management, traveler information, and improved trucking operations.
