Abstract:This research project assessed the multimodal transportation needs, constraints, and opportunities facing the state of Georgia and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The project report includes: 1) a literature review focusing on the current state of multimodal transportation planning practice within state DOTs; 2) an assessment of Georgia’s multimodal transportation needs through reviews of the state’s recent transportation planning documents and through interviews of key stakeholders; 3) a nationwide survey of state DOTs regarding critical multimodal transportation planning issues and how they are being addressed; and 4) case studies, including document reviews and some interviews with staff of selected state DOTs that were considered to offer noteworthy examples in one or more aspects of multimodal transportation planning. The report concludes with a set of 28 recommendations for advancing multimodal planning at the statewide level.
