Abstract:This project investigates the practical benefits of using shredded tires as a free draining material
in a subsurface French drain to enhance drainage along a section of highway. French drains are
below-grade structures designed to re-direct groundwater, typically around the foundation of a
building or structure. French drains are used to intercept groundwater flow on the upslope side
of such structures. A French drain usually feeds into a system of underdrains or to “daylight”.
