Abstract:George W. Bush became the forty-third president on January 20, 2001. Five days later, former Member of Congress Norman Mineta (D-CA) took the oath of office as the nation’s fourteenth Secretary of Transportation. The lone Democrat in George W. Bush’s cabinet, Mineta had been Secretary of Commerce in the outgoing Clinton Administration and was the first Asian Pacific American to hold this cabinet post. Mary Peters succeeded Mineta, who retired on October 24, 2006. Jane Garvey, who had been appointed to a five-year term as FAA Administrator remained in her position until the end of her term on August 2, 2002.
