Abstract:While nighttime driving volumes are lower than daytime, the percentage of crashes with respect to volume is higher, so it is critical that transportation agencies do everything economically possible to improve nighttime driving safety. One crucial part of nighttime driving safety is the visibility of traffic control devices (TCDs). This manual provides a description of the mobile luminance data collection system designed for TxDOT to evaluate the nighttime visibility of TCDs. The manual also contains detailed guidance on how to install the software and hardware, how to use the system, and how to conduct a post-processing analysis of images taken of the nighttime driving scene.
The purpose of this user manual is to guide field personnel through the installation and use of the mobile luminance data collection system as well as the general procedure for post-processing the data and troubleshooting the equipment and associated software. The mobile luminance data collection system is designed to measure luminance of the visual field in front of the data collection vehicle for the purposes of evaluating the effectiveness of delineation devices, such as pavement markings, pavement markers, delineators, and chevrons. The system may also be used to evaluate other traffic control devices, such as signs. While it would be possible to measure roadway lighting as well, the dynamic range of the existing cameras is such that it is not currently practical.
