Abstract:The objectives of this project include a careful examination of the issues surrounding high ammonia content in cement due to the use of ammoniated fly ash. The researchers will gather information from published material and consider policies and practices in other states. This information will be used to estimate the range of potential ammonia exposure to workers as a function of the amount of ammoniated fly ash used and its respective ammonia concentration. If the preliminary results suggest that exposure to ammonia could be an issue under plausible use scenarios, experimental studies will be initiated to determine an appropriate threshold that Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) can establish for use of ammoniated fly ash used under different conditions. A series of laboratory-scale and field/bench-scale experiments will be conducted using ammoniated fly ash at different concentrations and the ambient ammonia concentrations will be measured.
