Abstract:This asphalt concrete recycling project, the first attempted by the Washington State Department of Transportation, seems so far to be very successful. The project looks good from a standpoint of economy, energy use, conservation of natural resources, feasibility of construction, and from an evaluation of the test data obtained to date. Certain pitfalls seem to e~st when using this type of a recycling process, such as selection of the proper rejuvenator, degrading of the aggregates, pollution, proper amounts o£ new aggregate, and other minor problems. Properly conducted preliminary testing and design can avoid a multitude of these pitfalls. Future asphalt concrete recycling will most likely be a definite consideration in the rehabilitation of asphalt concrete highways in Washington. In fact, one project has already been scheduled for recycling in 1978 construction, with a number of additional pavements being considered for 1979 construction.
