Abstract:Importance of Inspection-Movable bridges are built to the rigid specifications
of such groups as the American Association of State Highway and
Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the American Road Builders Association
(ARBA) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL). While movable bridges are
designed to provide many years of reliable service, they operate in a harsh
environment. Machinery and electrical components are often exposed to the
weather year-round, and in salt-water areas, environmental deterioration is
accelerated. Many bridges in service today were built over fifty years ago,
and even the most ruggedly designed bridge cannot escape wear and
deterioration over such a long period.
