Abstract:The reliability of the Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) Accelerated Weathering Test to predict the degradation potential of untreated basaltic aggregates is evaluated. In the investigation two tasks were undertaken; 1) correlation of the tests results to petrographic analysis, and 2) establishment of acceptable weight loss limits after immersion of aggregates in DMSO. From the study of eight rock quarries in Oregon, it was found that the DMSO Accelerated Weathering Test results correlate well to a Secondary Mineral Rating. The Secondary Mineral Rating is based upon petrographic analyses, which accounts for the content and distribution of deleterious minerals in a rock.
