Abstract:This is the initial report for a study to determine the long term performance and life cycle costs for thin surface treatments. For this study a thin surface treatment is defined as less than 2 inches. A total of 89 projects constructed during 1984, 1985 and 1986 were selected for monitoring. Thin overlays, chip seals, chip seals with polymer modified asphalt, oil mats, and cold recycling sections were the major categories included in this study.
This report classifies the projects by type, location and year of construction; summarizes construction costs; outlines the evaluation criteria and methods; and lists the early rating results.
Insufficient time has passed to detect any trends or reach any conclusions.
