Abstract:This study was undertaken to examine the feasibility of utilizing shredded tires in hazardous roadside ditches. The concept behind this examination is primarily twofold. First, Louisiana has many miles of rural two lane highway with little or no shoulder which are immediately adjoined by large/deep drainage ditches. Many severe and fatal accidents have occurred when a vehicle leaves the roadway and impacts the side of the ditch or an associated culvert. Filling the ditch with a porous material, such as shredded tires, may prove to beneift highway safety.
The second reason behind this study is that this potential application could contribute to the reuse or consumption of a waste material that is becoming an environmental problem when stockpiled or normally disposed of or discarded.
It is author's opinion that this concept is feasible if utilized under carefully controlled conditions.
