Abstract:This study was initiated to find solutions to problems of inadequate lamp life in luminaires located on the state's bridges and overpasses. Since the problem was known to be caused by excess traffic vibration reaching the bulbs, an investigation of the nature and extent of this vibration as well as possible methods of suppression was begun.
Vibration data was gathered from three steel and two aluminum luminaires located on selected overpasses in the Baton Rouge area to determine the basic nature of traffic vibration which might cause shortened lamp life. Information obtained was used in designing an excitation device used to controllably simulate this vibration in similar luminaires installed in a laboratory environment. Four inertial dampers were tested for ability to suppress this induced vibration and minimize the amount reaching the bulbs. The laboratory phase was followed by a field evlauation in which dampers performing well in the laboratory were tested under actual traffic conditions. Field tests were also made on rubber damping pads installed beneath the liminaire pole mounting flanges. Overall test results showed that inertial dampers are effective at alleviating low frequency traffic vibration problems in luminaires located on overpasses. Heavy dampers are the most effective, but lighter types will suffice to reduce vibration to tolerable levels in most problem areas. The rubber damping pads exhibited no noticeable dampening effects.
