Abstract:This report describes the procedures and findings of a study conducted to evaluate two types of load transfer devices used in Louisiana--steel dowel bars and starlugs (a patented device). A statistical comparison was accomplished by evaluating existing concrete roadways with 58.5-foot (17.8-m), 30-foot (9.1-m), and 20-foot (6.1-m) slabs. The two primary aspects evaluated were: (1) measured load transfer capability by deflection analysis, and (2) physical pavement of all major pavement deterioration. The report further relates construction problems associated with each device, as well as the results of a questionnaire sent to highway field engineers.
