Abstract:The Louisiana Department of Highways has recently completed a program to evaluate the use of vibratory rollers in the compaction of asphaltic concrete pavements. In all, a total of nine different vibratory rollers was tested along with conventional static weight roller previously required by Specifications. Emphasis of the evaluation is centered upon two requirements contained in the Specifications: (1) relative roadway density and (2) surface smoothness. In addition, results obtained with the various vibratory rollers are compared with results produced by conventional rollers and rolling methods.
Results obtained from two construction projects indicate that vibratory rollers used alone are capable of replacing the three static weight rollers in the compaction process. Overall density and surface smoothness results compared closely with those obtained by conventional rolling methods and were found to meet specification requirements. It was therefore recommended, and subsequently adopted by the Department, that vibratory rollers be permitted as an alternate to conventional rollers on all existing and future construction projects involving the compaction of asphaltic concrete.
