Abstract:

Highway design engineers in the U.S. have been relying on the 1986-1993 American Association

of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Design Guide, which is based on the

many empirical elements obtained in the 40-year old AASHO Road Test. Today, traffic volumes,

traffic loads, and expectations for better pavement performance have outgrown the accuracy of the empirical design method.
