Abstract:Laboratory flume testing of native Utah non-salmonid fish was performed to observe how
they use altered flow around obstacles to swim upstream. Three experimental setups included
a bare Plexiglas flume, vertical cylinders, and natural substrate placed in the flume. It was
found that substrate provides the most refuge for upstream swimming fish. Field tested
results of these experimental findings in Phase IIwill allow engineers to take advantage of
reduced velocity zones in retrofitted culvert design.
