This report first explains what a limited access highway is, then describes the benefits and advantages of limited access highways. As compared with highways with no control of access, limited access highways (especially those with full control) have the following benefits and advantages: greater capacity; improved safety; reduced fuel consumption; less pollution; more positive impacts on motorists; and more positive impacts on neighborhoods.
