Abstract:The three most widely used current methods for detecting deterioration of concrete bridge decks associated with spalling were compared with a visual inspection of the reinforcing steel and to each other in order to determine the degree of agreement among the methods. The three methods are known as the Chain Drag Method, Measurement of Corrosion Potentials, and the Hammer Method. On a bridge scheduled for deck replacement, each of the methods was used to designate the areas of deck to be removed and the results were compared with the findings of a visual inspection of the rebar. It was concluded that the three techniques were practical and effective. However, in order to ensure that a high percentage of deteriorated areas are located, two of the detection methods should be used and the areas indicated by both methods should be removed.
