Since the city of Charlottesville began operating its bus service in September 1976, there has been a 20% increase in patronage. City officials were interested in determining the reasons for the increase and any changes in the characteristics of the riders. Data from an on-board survey pointed to an increase from new riders rather than an increase in the numbers of times people took the bus or in Charlottesville's population. The new riders started riding the buses primarily because they were new to the area or found the buses more convenient than they had in 1976. The analysis of the results of the survey revealed a large increase in the number of students riding the buses and a decrease in the percentages of elderly riders and those with no other form of transportation. The respondents in the 1978 survey generally were more satisfied with the bus service than were respondents in a 1976 study.
