Abstract:This report presents interim data from the ongoing field study of an experimental shredded-tire embankment constructed near Williamsburg, Virginia. Approximately 1.7 million tires were used. This constitutes the largest reported use to date of waste tires in a structural fill in the United States. The aim of this study is to conduct a comparative performance analysis of conventional and shredded-tire embankments. The results to date indicate that the settlement of a shredded-tire embankment significantly exceeds that of a soil embankment. After construction, expansion of the shredded-tirefill was also observed.
