This study was initiated to investigate the overall performance of preformed pavement marking tapes with respect to their appearance, durability, and night visibility, and to recommend criteria for the selection of such materials based on their performance. The durability of each material varied with the location and pavement type. Compared with that of traffic paint, the night visibility of the materials evaluated was very poor. Also, problems that made the installation process inefficient and sometimes dangerous were noted for centerline application procedures. It is thought that if the problems cited in this report can be remedied, preformed tape could be used effectively for pavement marking.
