Abstract:Information has been gathered regarding the performance of more than 400 lane-miles of jointed PCC interstate pavements located in five construction districts in Virginia. The factors causing pavement deterioration have been identified, the processes associated with deterioration have been described, and typical examples of distress, or failure types, have been recorded. Recommendations are made with respect to (a) criteria for determining the latest time at which the initiation of permanent pavement repairs should be considered, (b) a rapid technique for visual surveys to ascertain pavement conditions, (c) the communication of the study findings to field forces, (d) the practice of installing temporary bituminous patches, and, (e) the continuation and expansion on of preventive maintenance activities.
