Abstract:

This handbook is intended to assist engineers and technicians with the design, layout, and ; operation of a video imaging vehicle detection system (VIVDS). This assistance is provided in ; three ways. First, the handbook identifies the optimal detection design and layout. Second, it ; provides guidelines for achieving an optimal or near-optimal camera location and field of view. ; Third, it provides guidelines for laying out the VIVDS detectors such that they will provide safe ; and efficient operation. Finally, guidance is provided on the need for and schedule of VIVDS ; maintenance activities. ; Some of the guidance provided in this document was obtained from a review of the ; literature and from interviews with TxDOT staff. Some guidance was also developed using the ; geometric relationships of camera optics and the principles of detection design. The report by ; Bonneson and Abbas (1) documents these development activities. In particular, it describes the ; rationale underlying the guidance and the validation of some guidelines based on simulation or ; field data.
