Abstract:This handbook is intended to assist engineers and technicians with the design, layout, and
operation of a video imaging vehicle detection system (VIVDS). This assistance is provided in
three ways. First, the handbook identifies the optimal detection design and layout. Second, it
provides guidelines for achieving an optimal or near-optimal camera location and field of view.
Third, it provides guidelines for laying out the VIVDS detectors such that they will provide safe
and efficient operation. Finally, guidance is provided on the need for and schedule of VIVDS
maintenance activities.
Some of the guidance provided in this document was obtained from a review of the
literature and from interviews with TxDOT staff. Some guidance was also developed using the
geometric relationships of camera optics and the principles of detection design. The report by
Bonneson and Abbas (1) documents these development activities. In particular, it describes the
rationale underlying the guidance and the validation of some guidelines based on simulation or
field data.
