Abstract The use of infrared radiation for the detection
;
of concealed metal objects has been investigated both
;
theoretically and experimentally. The investigation was
;
divided into two phases, one which considered passive
;
techniques, and another which involved active sources of
;
radiation to probe the subject. Because of the limited
;
amount of time and equipment available, only primitive
;
systems were studied, but the results serve as a fundamental
;
guide to the requirements of a field operational
;
system. The results obtained show that metals concealed
;
by clothing can definitely be detected by observing the
;
far infra-red radiation from the region of the hidden
;
object. This type of system has the very attractive
;
feature of high spatial resolution, and can easily distinguish
;
between dangerous weapons and harmless objects.
