Abstract:This report provides baseline measurements on the Display System Replacement (DSR). These measurements followed six constructs:
safety, capacity, performance, workload, usability, and simulation fidelity. To collect these measurements, human factors researchers
conducted an air traffic control simulation using four sectors of Washington Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) airspace with a
traffic volume representing a 90th percentile day. Ten controllers from Washington ARTCC served as participants in the study.
Recordings and questionnaires provided objective and subjective measurements such as the number of aircraft controlled and controller
workload. This report provides statistics at several levels of specificity: aggregated across all sectors and positions, by individual
sectors and positions, and by 12-minute intervals. We intend that data from the study will provide a meaningful representation of the
DSR controller position. In addition, this report compares these data to equivalent data collected on the Plan View Display, the
equipment that the DSR replaces. We discuss several differences between the systems and provide recommendations for improvements
to the baseline process.
