  • Abstract:
This publication looks at several considerations regarding the problem of driver improvement. In order to solve the problem of inefficient driver performance and traffic accidents, more information needs to be known about the nature of the driver and the factors that determine his or her involvement in accidents. This publication brings together pertinent information on the driver, and presents a summary and some evaluation of many of the research studies conducted in this area. An attempt has been made to treat the driver-behavior problem in relation to the psychophysical factors and forces in the traffic environment that impinge upon the driver. Individual chapters address the nature of the driver improvement problem; accident records and driver performance; psychophysical aptitudes, limitations and accidents; physical, mental and emotional factors; regulations, enforcement and driver behavior; highway design, traffic control, and driving; accident repeaters and chronic violators; driver licensing; and driver improvement through driver education.
