Abstract:Public transportation systems play a key role throughout the country not only in providing vital services to citizens but also in the environmental quality of our communities. Transit systems nationwide are seeking out new technologies in order to increase US energy independence and reduce emissions by switching to biodiesel in diesel buses. This report discusses the benefits and challenges to the transit industry of using biodiesel. It provides information on the characteristics of biodiesel and biodiesel blends and discusses best practices for the procurement, blending, storage and use of biodiesel.
