Abstract:This short guide has been prepared in an effort to further the successful intermodal carriage of cargo in answer to the request of shippers. This booklet has been compiled as a generalized approach to intermodal transport and door-to-door shipments which include rail, highway and ocean. It is important that shippers realize that the container will be subjected to a variety of motions and forces. On a sea passage, it will be subjected to six distinctive, basic ship motions: rolling, pitching, yawing, heaving, sway and surging. This guide discusses selection of the correct type of container for cargo type, strength standards, weight distribution, space utilization, compatibility of cargoes, and stowage patterns for various types of cargoes. 27 p.
