Seven experimental whitetopping projects were constructed in Illinois between 1998 and 2001. Three of these projects included the rehabilitation of intersections, while the remaining four were a rehabilitation of mainline pavement. The three intersection projects include whitetopping of both existing bituminous pavements and
existing concrete pavements (thin bonded concrete overlay). All four of the mainline pavement projects were a rehabilitation of an existing bituminous pavement. This report summarizes the construction and early performance of all seven projects. Details of the design, construction methods, construction costs, and early performance are addressed. Visual distress surveys and sounding of the overlay for delaminations have been conducted on an annual basis for performance. Initial performance reviews for the four mainline pavement projects indicate excellent results. Performance reviews for the whitetopping portions of the intersection projects indicate good performance. Performance
reviews for the thin bonded concrete overlay portions of the intersection projects indicate poor performance.
