Abstract:The infrastructure on which American society depends, in sectors such as transportation, finance, energy, and telecommunications is becoming increasingly automated as advances in information technology open up new possibilities for improved service, lower cost, and greater efficiency. The automation--or cybernation--of the infrastructure has come about largely becasue it offers unmistable economic and performance benefits. As a result, however, the United States has become a wired nationa, with implications that are not fully understood.
