• Abstract:
  Report evaluates the implementation, operations and impacts of the Westport Transit District's demonstration grant to examine the feasibility of combining shared ride taxi service and other paratransit services with conventional bus services. Report covers the period November 1976-1979. The planned and actual project implementation is described, including important Federal litigation initiated against the project by one of the two local taxi operators. Also described are the integrated fleet management and vehicle deployment strategies utilized by the WTD to provide regular fixed route, supplemental fixed route, shared ride taxi, and special markets services. Arrangements for system integration in the areas of maintenance, marketing, public information, and fare structure are also discussed. The evaluation examines ridership markets, system productivity, service economics and community impacts.
