Abstract:This report examines the condition of rural county and town bridges across the United States, with comparisons based on two data sets. The first is the results of surveys mailed to highway administrators in 2321 counties and 9064 towns in Fall 1994 and Spring 1995 to which a total of 539 counties and 1961 towns provided usable information. Respondents were asked to rate the condition of bridges for which they are responsible, especialy those less than 20 feet long. It also asked about management practices used in bridge construction and maintenance, and about other local transportation issues. The second data source is the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) compiled by the Federal Highway Administration. Rural is defined as counties with less than 85% urbanized population (1990 Census). Three main issues are discussed: current condition of bridges; adequacy of funds available for bridges to determine whether current structures can be maintained or expansion needs met, and the management practices used to maintain bridges, and changes needed.
