Abstract:Author's abstract: Some alcohol-related crashes may be caused by motorists who drive after drinking because arranging for alternative transportation is too difficult or inconvenient (a sober friend may not be available to drive the motorist home, the motorist may be reluctant to leave his or her car unattended, etc.). This Directory lists 325 Ride Service Programs from 44 states and the District of Columbia that provide intoxicated drivers with a safe alternative ride home. Many of the entries summarize key program features such as who sponsors the program, whether the program operates on holidays versus year-round, whether the rider's car is transported, and the types of transport used (cab, bus, tow truck, etc.). All the entries provide the information needed to contact program spokespeople for additional information. Over 500 leads were collected from various sources, however, entries are restricted to those programs for which information could be verified by contacting program personnel directly. Information is provided on how Ride Service personnel can advise NHTSA of program changes, new programs, or programs that were unintentionally omitted. The introduction describes two other reports being prepared under this contract: a technical research report, and a report directed at state and local planners that provides an overview of all the programs in this Directory and describes some of them in detail.
