Abstract:In 1996, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), at the request of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), began efforts to refocus transportation professionals and enhance their expertise on addressing community impact issues through the publication of a user-friendly primer, "Community Impact Assessment: A Quick Reference for Transportation". In an effort to continue this initiative, this Community Impact Assessment (CIA) workshop was planned by a research design team composed primarily of metropolitan planning organization, State Department of Transportation (DOT) and FHWA practitioners. The intent was to provide an interactive forum for the development of action plans that fully implement and operationalize the CIA primer, focusing on making CIA techniques standard-operating-procedures within the transportation planning and project-development processes. Participants addressed the following issues: information needed by transportation decision makers, approaches being used to change "old" practices, and resources available to help in current CIA efforts.
