Abstract:

Startup airlines that do not have sufficient capital are forced to acquire older aircraft and contract out maintenance, crew training, and operation management. These factors can contribute to the poorly supervised practices as illustrated in this case study of the crash of a ValuJet DC-9 on May 11, 1996. The areas of focus are aircraft age, maintenance, safety record, cargo handling, and crew resource management. References, 2 appendices. 9 p.
