Abstract:Passive alcohol sensors were tested in three states to determine their effectiveness in enforcing zero tolerance or low BAC laws for under 21 age drivers. The passive alcohol sensor was designed to sample the air immediately around the suspect for signs of exhaled alcohol. A sensor typically indicated the presence of alcohol, but not the amount. NHTSA sponsored a field evaluation of the sensors that focused on youth alcohol enforcement.
