Abstract:This project was funded in 1975 for a 1 year planning phase, a 2 year operational phase, and a 221 year follow up period. During the operational phase, 4,148 clients were classified by drinker type using Mortimer-Filkins, and randomly assigned to treatments: 1) Probation, 2) Rehabilitation, 3)Probation plus Rehabilitation, or 4) Control (traditional sanctions). The Life Activities Inventory was administered to 20% of each drinker classification of each group at program entry, and after 6 and 12 months. The objective was to assess the relative effectiveness within drinker classification of the use of probation, over and above other treatments and traditional sanctions. There were no significant differences among the groups in rearrest recidivism, although problem drinkers had significantly higher rearrest rates during the follow up which tends to validate the classification procedure.Problem drinkers were found more likely to be rearrested for DWI and less likely to be cited for other moving violations. There were no differences in subsequent accidental rates attributable to the treatments. A costing model was developed for determining costs per client for the treatments which can be used by program planners. /Abstract from report summary page/
