Abstract:
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), as part if a comprehensive research program, has sponsored the Improved Track Structures Research Program (ITSRP) at the Transportation Systems Center (TSC). The study, documented in this report, supports the ITSRP through analysis of data contained in the new FRA Railroad Accident Incident Reporting System, established in 1975. This study has led to the identification of leading causes of--and factors contributing to--track-related accidents. These results will be useful in increasing the effectiveness of track safety program by assisting in the refinement of research priorities and the identification of improved maintenance techniques, operations guidelines, and safety standards for reducing track-related accidents.
