Abstract:An assessment of the potential barriers to the commercialization of electric and hybrid vehicles due to insurance considerations and the absence of a range extension infrastructure was performed. Availability of operator and manufacturers liability insurance for the present small population of electric vehicles is not a major problem.
Many of the elements of the infrastructure needed to recharge a large number of electric vehicles in the U.S. are already in place. The major element of the refueling infrastructure for electric vehicles is range extension support. In the nearer term, development of a range extension hybrid, which could utilize network of gasoline service stations, appears to be a feasible approach to this problem.
