Abstract:Because of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, there is a heightened awareness of both the importance and vulnerability of transportation systems and the need for improved emergency response planning. This article reviews the work of the Volpe Center both immediately after the attacks as well the ongoing work in support of a comprehensive Federal Highway Administration effort to examine the impacts of catastrophic events on transportation systems and lessons learned that will be incorporated into future emergency response planning.
