Abstract:In 2012, the Salida Ranger District of the Pike and San Isabel National Forest (Salida District) asked the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) to identify options to provide or enhance alternative transportation service from Salida, Colorado, to Monarch Mountain Ski Area. Following a significant decline in ridership on the Salida Shuttle dduring the 2012-2013 ski season as well as an unsuccessful Paul S. Sarabanes Transit in Parks (TRIP) grant application, the Salida District decided not to pursue the expansion of Salida Shuttle service. Instead, the Salida District would like to promote ridesharing to Monarch Mountain Ski Area from the towns of Salida, Buena Vista, and Poncha Springs. This memo summarizes 1) attractions in the area, 2) existing transportation services in and to the area, 3) challenges to providing alternative transportation from the Salida area to Monarch, and 4) opportunities for providing or expanding alternative transportation in the area.
