Abstract:This report describes the computer simulation of a battery-powered bus as it traverses an arbitrary mission profile of specified acceleration, roadway grade, and headwind. The battery-bus system components comprise a DC shunt motor, solid-state power conditioning unit with regeneration capability, and a battery source consisting of a multi-unit lead acid battery. The computer model determines vehicle tractive effort and power consumption and computes actual vehicle speed for a given mission profile. The program output data is tabulated in a from which allows easy recognition of the various operational modes and power-limited regimes. The computer model uses a "modularization" format which facilitates the simulation of alternate propulsion systems involving the interchange of one system component for another. The model is applied to simulate the propulsion characteristics of a typical bus operating over a specified drive cycle. The results of this study demonstrate the applicability of the battery bus model for predicting bus propulsion characteristics under simulated drive conditions. This report provides charts depicting the plotting program, input data required by the Battery Bus Performance Program, Fortran source listings and data files, as well as a Glossary of Program Constants and Variables.
