Abstract:In the future, further reduction in fatalities, fuel consumption and emissions dur to automobile use will be needed. To insure that these goals are achieved, it is necessary to understand more thoroughly the role of the federal initiatives and regulation in encouraging the development, implementation and adoption of innovative automobile technology. The study provides an important link in addressing these questions. It examines the pattern of past Federal initiatives in the automobile industry and the effect of those initiatives on innovation. In addition, a framework is developed for assessing the joint consequences of Federal technology creation and market pull initiatives on the diffusion process.
