Abstract:This report examines the safety issues relating to the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in transit service. The safety issues were determined by on-site surveys performed by Battelle of Columbus, Ohio and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) of McLean, Virginia of seven transit agencies using CNG. The survey consisted of: 1) extensive interviews; 2) review of records, procedures, and plans relating to safety; 3) examination of facilities and equipment; 4) observation of operations including fueling, maintenance, morning start-up, and revenue service; and 5) measurements of methane concentrations in the air where buses are being fueled or stored. Interviews included all job categories associated with management, operations, safety, maintenance, acquisition, and support.
