Abstract:This report summarizes the activities and results of the research effort on Class I railroads operating in 1978 and between 1962 and 1977. Five tasks have been presented as follows: (1) industry interviews, (2) hypothesis development, (3) data acquisition, (4) model development, and (5) forecast and assessment of results through the year 1990. Application of the model to the 1978-90 forecast for the Class I industry as a whole demonstrated the utility of the model as a means of assisting Federal policy evaluation and analysis.
