Abstract:The flexibility of remote sensing of oil spills by laser-excited oil fluorescence is investigated. The required parameters are fed into a physical model to predict signal and background levels; and the predictions are verified by field experiments. Airborne detection, identification, and quantification of oil spills at sea are shown to be feasible with existing equuipment, day or night.
